Review of the Manhattan Hotel, Sukhumvit Soi 15, Bangkok

The Manhattan Hotel is my ‘go to’ hotel in the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok.

Probably the Cheapest Luxury Hotel in Bangkok

I first discovered this place in 2005 and I have been coming back every time since.

It manages the perfect combination of a good quality room, excellent location, wide range of facilities, all at a value for money price. The service at this independent Thai hotel is efficient, polite and understanding. They also serve a really good Asian buffet breakfast. My wife complains if I take her to stay at another Bangkok hotel.

Never Heard of the Manhattan Hotel Before?

If you haven’t heard of the Manhattan Hotel that is because they do not do much marketing. They don’t need to. This hotel has been doing a roaring trade since the 1970s when it opened. In terms of volume of guests this has to be one of most successful hotels in Bangkok. People who know Bangkok well come here. Last time I stayed here they were turning away people looking for a room at 10.00 because they were fully booked. You need to book in advance if you want to be guaranteed a room.

Large Rooms at the Manhattan Hotel

The rooms are slightly larger than the average for a 4 star hotel in Bangkok at around 30 sqm. They come with the all important free internet, English language TV channels, hot water in the shower, an in room safe that actually works and a kettle to make coffee. The beds are comfortable. They also have whole floors dedicated to smokers. Which is a plus point for both smokers and non-smokers.

The hotel has a pool and a gym. It also has three restaurants. Other than the buffet breakfast I have to admit I have never been to any of the restaurants. What I regularly do, however, is to use room service. My favourite dish is their steak sandwich and fries. 220 THB delivered to the room within 15 minutes of phoning down to reception. Perfect. My wife does the Thai food and has no complaints. Which is remarkable as she is very fussy about the precise balance of flavours. Personally I would not able to tell the difference. Cheap and tasty room service food is a real selling point for a Bangkok hotel.

Buffet Breakfast at The Manhattan Hotel

I like the buffet breakfast which is served at the Manhattan Hotel from 07.00 to 10.00. It is worth booking a room that includes breakfast. This is an ‘Asian Buffet Breakfast’, however, it a good one which includes many dishes that will appeal to Western guests and as well as Asian one:

  • Tea, coffee and fruit juice
  • Salad and fruit
  • Breafast cereals and yoghurt
  • Bread, croissant, butter and jam
  • Fried eggs and chicken sausages
  • Fried rice and fried noodles
  • Rice soup and two or three Thai dishes
  • Plain rice
  • Sushi
  • Western and Thai condiments

It gets busy for breakfast particularly between 08.00 and 09.00 when business travellers and people on tours go for breakfast before commencing a busy day of work or sightseeing. Best to go a little earlier or a later a quiet breakfast.

This hotel is not very far from both public transport, 350 metres to the Nana BTS station or 700 metres to Sukhumvit MRT station, and plenty of good bars and restaurants. Sukhumvit (an area spread along either side of the busy Sukhumvit Road) is home to Bangkok’s widest range of restaurants. Every type of food is represented here, along with some of the top independent restaurants in the City. If, like me, you like Indian food then this is the area to come to. The same is true is want to eat European food. A branch of Hooters has just opened on the other side of the street from the Manhattan hotel. I haven’t been in yet (because my wife has been with me the two times I have stayed since Hooters opened in Bangkok) but the Hooters menu looks good. For those seeking a more sophisticated Thai dining experience, try Cabbages and Condoms (so called because it is run by a sexual health charity) on Soi 22 a 5 minute walk away over the conveniently placed pedestrian fly over near the entrance to Soi 15.

Colourful Local Nightlife

The local nightlife is colourful and lively. For couples and families it is a short walk down to Sukhumvit Soi 11 for beer gardens and nightclubs, and the ever popular Soi 5 is 10 minutes walk away from the Manhattan Hotel. For visitors who want to visit Go-Go bars then its a 10 minute walk down to either the Nana Plaza on Sukhumvit Soi 3 or up to Soi 21 to go the notorious ‘Soi Cowboy’. This the great thing about staying in the Sukhumvit Area – there is something for people of all ages, poor or rich.
