Bus services from Chiang Mai to Bangkok

There are three bus services I recommend for the journey from Chiang Mai to Bangkok.

  • Option 1: Thai Sriram. A direct service from Chiang Mai old town to the Khao San Road area of Bangkok. This is a very popular service particularly with people who plan to stay in the Khao San Road area. The second and third recommended services depart from Chiang Mai’s main bus station, 2 km outside the city.
  • Option 2: Bangkok Busline & Lignite. These services terminate at Morchit bus station in the north of Bangkok which is near Chatuchak Market and a 10 minute taxi ride to a Sky train (BTS) or metro (MRT) station.
  • Option 3:  Bangkok Busline. This service stops at Viphavadee Road which is a shorter taxi journey to a BTS station.

Bus 1: Thai Sriram Company

Wat Arun in Bangkok

This service leaves from the Moonmuang Road, which is the road which goes around the inside of the moat surrounding the old city of Chiang Mai. The arrival point in Bangkok is on the Chakrabongse Road, a 5 minute walk away from the popular Khao San Road area. This service is very popular because there is no need to arrange travel to Chiang Mai bus station (a 2 km journey from Chiang Mai old town) or a journey from Morchit Bus Station in the north of Bangkok to the popular tourist areas of Bangkok.

Bus 2: Bangkok Busline/Lignite

These services depart from Chiang Mai Bus Terminal 2 and arrives at Bangkok’s northern bus terminal, Morchit. This route is the cheapest and has most departures during the day. The more expensive departure with the Bangkok Busline at 20.00 is a VIP bus with reclining seats.

Morchit Bus Station

Morchit Bus Station in Bangkok has recently been refurbished and now has indoor air-conditioned waiting rooms, shops, and dining halls. To travel from Morchit Bus Station into Central Bangkok you need to get in taxi. If you want to do the onward journey cheaply only take the taxi as far as Mo Chit BTS (skytrain) station or Chatuchak Park MRT (metro) station and then change to public transport. Both stations are about 5 to 10 minutes drive away and it should cost you around 40 THB in a meter taxi. If it is daytime, and you are feeling athletic, you can walk across the parks. Be careful though crossing the roads as they have many lanes and the traffic goes fast. At a brisk pace it takes about 20 minutes to do the walk.

Bus 3Bus to Viphavadi Road

These services also leave from Chiang Mai Bus Terminal 2. The bus station on the Viphavadee Road is slightly nearer to an MRT (underground train) than Morchit Bus Station, but still slightly further than most people would be comfortable to walk.
